Logs – Conifer

Hemlock logs – with or without bark

  • Import permit NOT required for Hemlock (No Hem-Fir mix)
  • Phytosanitary certificate required
  • With bark
    • fumigated with methyl bromide (CFIA pre-approval required)
    • CFIA Inspection and Phytosanitary Certificate Required.
  • Without bark
    • Heat treated (minimum of 56degrees C core temperature for a minimum of 30 minutes) and marked “HT”, OR,
    • Kiln dried to a moisture content of less than 20% and marked “KD”, OR
    • Fumigated with methyl bromide (CFIA pre-approval required), and,
    • CFIA Inspection and Phytosanitary Certificate Required

Logs of Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata), Eastern White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis), Yellow Cedar (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis) – All species as listed must be De-Barked, AND  …..

  • Import permit required
  • Phytosanitary certificate with treatment and additional declaration required
  • Free from pests and bark
  • Heat treated (56/30) OR fumigation with Methyl bromide (requires CFIA pre-approval) prior to export as well as being de-barked.

Logs (Hardwood)

Cherry Logs (Prunus spp) with or without bark

  • Import permit required
  • Phytosanitary certificate with additional declaration required
  • Free of soil, pests and diseases
  • Must be fumigated (requires CFIA pre-approval)

Oak Logs (Quercus spp.) – with or without bark

  • Import permit required
  • Phytosanitary certificate with additional declaration required
  • Must be kiln-dried to less than 20% and marked “KD” OR  fumigated with methyl bromide (requires CFIA pre-approval)

Lumber – Coniferous

  • An Import permit is required for each of the following Genera/species: Chamaecyparis nootkatensis, Thuja occidentalis, Thuja plicata, Pinus spp., Abies spp., Picea (glauca, engelmannii, sitchensis, Pseudotsuga menziesii  (see How-To section on Import Permits – especially with reference to “collective species such as SPF and Hem-fir)
  • Hemlock (Tsuga spp.) does NOT require an import permit (this exemption does NOT apply to the Hem-Fir mix)
  • Phytosanitary certificate with treatment and additional declaration is required
  • Heat treatment required  (Green lumber is NOT allowed)
  • Wood is “without bark” as specified on import permits**
  • Freedom from specific pests

Note re: bark tolerance for “wood without bark” may be interpreted as being “bark free” or possibly being equivalent to the tolerance utilized in ISPM 15 bark standards.  (Check with CFIA for guidance)

Lumber – Hardwood

Ash (Fraxinus spp.)

Prohibited

Birch (Betula spp.)

  • Import permit is required
  • Phytosanitary certificate with treatment and additional declaration is required
  • Fumigated with methyl bromide (requires CFIA pre-approval)

Cherry (Prunus spp.)

  • Import permit required
  • Phytosanitary certificate with additional declaration required
  • Free of soil, pests and diseases
  • Must be fumigated (requires CFIA pre-approval)

Maple (Acer spp.) without bark

  • Import permit not required
  • Phytosanitary certificate required
  • Must be kiln-dried to less than 20% and marked “KD”, OR
  • Heat-Treated to a minimum of 56 degrees C for a minimum of 30 minutes to the core of the product.

Oak (Quercus spp.) – with or without bark

  • Import permit required
  • Phytosanitary certificate with treatment and additional declaration required
  • Must be kiln-dried to less than 20% and marked “KD” ; or fumigated with methyl bromide (requires CFIA pre-approval)

Manufactured Wood Products

  • No import permit required
  • No phytosanitary certificate required
  • Includes plywood, particle board, oriented strand board and veneer
