Two options to export most wood products to South Africa:
1). An Import Permit and a Phytosanitary Certificate is required – OR
2). A Phytosanitary Certificate with Additional Declaration(s) and specific requirement(s).
Option 1 – Entry via an Import Permit and a Phytosanitary Certificate: :

- Consignment must be free from pests and bark.
- Phytosanitary Certificate with Additional Declaration: ”THIS CONSIGNMENT WAS HEAT TREATED THROUGH DRY HEAT AT A CORE TEMPERATURE OF 56 DEGREES CELSIUS FOR AT LEAST 30 MINUTES.”
- Fumigation with methyl bromide is an option in exceptional circumstances – requires pre-approval by CFIA.
- Import Permit with OPTION 1 b):
- Consignment must be free from pests and soil.
- Phytosanitary Certificate with Additional Declaration: “THIS CONSIGNMENT WAS HEAT TREATED THROUGH DRY HEAT AT A CORE TEMPERATURE OF 56 DEGREES CELSIUS FOR AT LEAST 30 MINUTES AND THIS CONSIGNMENT IS FREE FROM SOIL.”
- Fumigation with methyl bromide is an option in exceptional circumstances – requires pre-approval by CFIA.
- Import Permit with OPTION 1 c): (includes green lumber)
- Consignment must be free from pests.
- NO ADDITIONAL DECLARATION REQUIRED.
- An ordinary Phytosanitary Certificate based on the inspection
- Treatment at port of entry at the importer’s expense.
Option 2 – Contact CFIA for requirements to export based on a Phytosanitary Certificate with Additional Declarations for “specific commodities” – with NO Import Permit required.
Manufactured Wood Products
- Unrestricted. Manufactured wood products are commodities that have been created using glue, heat or pressure, or a combination thereof or that have been processed or manufactured in any way that renders the product free of pests. Such products include plywood, particle board, oriented strand board and veneer.
